Preparing for Adulthood Factsheet

Did you know that as well as the Children and Families Act coming into force this September, there is also the Care Act coming into force in April 2015?

The Care Act will affect disabled young people aged 18 and over, including those transitioning from children’s to adult services.

This means that those in the 18-25 age group will be affected by both Acts.

Preparing for Adulthood have produced a factsheet to explain how the two Acts are linked.

You can download it here or find it on their website:

Space4Autism Parent/Carer Workshop

Aspergers Syndrome:

“Through School and Beyond”

GIVEN BY

Martyn Jowett – ProACT/Deputy SENCO

The Autism Spectrum is wide and varied in nature. Individuals on the high-functioning end or those with Aspergers Syndrome more often than not enter the mainstream school system. Due to the ‘hidden’ nature of Aspergers Syndrome the true nature of the problem or indeed even the diagnosis does not appear until the move to Senior school.  Presented by Martyn Jowett who has over twenty five years working in special education with individuals on the autism spectrum, the course looks at some of the problems and pitfalls of entering mainstream school. From that difficult first transition, through reasonable adjustments, bullying, puberty and where to get help, Martyn’s course finishes with the individual leaving school or progressing to college.  The course is presented using a combination of short talks, workshop activities and group discussion to suit a range of learning styles and is suitable for anybody supporting a young person through mainstream education such as parents, teachers and other educational support staff.

To keep costs down for Parents/Carers Space4Autism are partly funding this presentation cost to parents/carers will be £5.00 per person

The Children and Families Act is going to result in a huge change to the law around SEN. Understanding this change is crucial for all those who have or care for a child with a learning disability aged 0-25. The new SEN legal system under the Act will start coming into force from September 2014.

Martin Howlett has worked on the implementation of the 2014 Children and Families Act and new SEND Code of Practice training pathfinder Local Authorities in the implications for workforce and systems in relation to parents and Carers.

Space4Autism Talk Macclesfield

Alison is a young woman with Aspergers Syndrome. She was diagnosed at the age of 13 in Eindhoven, Holland. Alison is able to give a unique insight, not only into how autism has affected her, but how many of the young people we support struggle with everyday things such as school and coping with anxiety and bullies.  Alison’s reflections on her own life and her own triumphs offer guidance on how we all can better approach those individuals that we support.  Alison will be more than happy to take questions at the end of her presentation
